Cake Balls

Here is an easy recipe for a treat that tastes great:

1 cake mix + ingredients to make the cake (you choose the flavor)
1 can of frosting (you choose the flavor)
1 1/2 - 2 lbs. (approximately) coating (such as dipping chocolate, melting chips, or almond bark)

Make and bake the cake according to package directions. Allow it to cool for about 10 minutes, then crumble it into a large bowl. Thoroughly mix in the can of frosting. Allow to cool completely.

Shape into balls, and place them on a foil or waxed paper lined cookie sheet or cutting board. Chill until firm (approximately half an hour to an hour), and then dip in the coating of your choice, returning them to the lined cookie sheet or cutting board to sit until the coating hardens.

I use the small scoop (1 T. size) from Pampered Chef to portion them out and then roll them between my hands to make sure that they stay together. You can make them larger or smaller, depending upon your preferences. The amount of coating needed will be partly dependent upon the size of the balls you create.

The possible combinations are endless, but here are a couple that I enjoy:
Strawberry cake, Cream cheese frosting, Vanilla almond bark
Chocolate cake, Chocolate frosting, Chocolate almond bark

A variation on this recipe:
Crumble a package of Oreos cookies in the blender or food processor. You'll want to make sure that there aren't any chunks left. Mix in an 8 oz. block of softened cream cheese. Then shape into balls and continue as in the recipe above. These are good dipped in either vanilla or chocolate almond bark, and the mint Oreos make this especially good!

  1. Wow! Thanks for this recipe, Sandy! I just tried one of these Cake Balls for the first time today at a "Christmas Luncheon." It was really good. Now I know how to make it, too! I've heard of the oreo balls, also, but never tried them. Can't wait to make them myself sometime!

  2. I've heard that you can also mix together crushed Nutter Butter cookies and block of cream cheese to make the balls, but I haven't tried them yet.
